Spinal Decompression Table in The Villages

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Excruciating low back pain can hinder motion and leave you tied to the bed. Disruptions in the spine lead to sharp, radiating nerve pains that do not respond to most of the over-the-counter painkillers.

Thus, the only way to treat low back pain arising from compression of spinal nerves is to set the spine back to its original position. This resetting can be achieved either surgically or via non-surgical spinal decompression also known as traction therapy.

Who Needs Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression?

There are different conditions for which your doctor might recommend a manual traction therapy, some of which are discussed below:

Sciatica Or Low Back Pain

As per the WHO, the lifetime prevalence of low back pain is estimated to be as high as 70% (average is 60-70%) in industrialized countries. Therefore, it is important to treat low back pain/sciatica with minimal invasion.

The sciatic nerve is a major nerve that innervates the back and the legs. Inflammation of this nerve (due to compression or other causes) leads to a painful condition called sciatica.

As per a retrospective cohort study, non-surgical spinal disc compression effectively reduces discogenic low back pain and also improves disc height.

Another study found this procedure to be a less-expensive treatment for low back pain/sciatica.

Neck Pain

Cervical and neck pain due to nerve compression are common complaints that are managed well by physiotherapy/chiropractic treatment. According to a study published in the Journal of Novel Physiotherapy and Physical Rehabilitation non-surgical spinal decompression is an effective treatment modality for neck and back pain.

Disc Herniation

Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a condition that can lead to nerve symptoms such as radiating pain, burning, tingling, or numbness. Traction therapy can also be performed using decompression devices. It effectively alleviates symptoms of disc herniation, a study suggests.

Other conditions for which the non-interventional procedure can be employed include posterior facet syndrome and worn-out spinal joints.

How Is It Done?

A manual traction procedure usually lasts for 30 to 45 minutes. The patient’s spine is protected by fitting a harness around the trunk and pelvis region.

The patient is then made to lie face down and the doctor uses a computerized device for traction (tailored to the specific needs of the patient).

Non Surgical spinal decompression is available at Legacy Clinic of Chiropractic in The Villages, FL.

This Is How You Squat - Jenny Sweat Corrective Trainer

Did you know a squat is an important functional movement because we all squat during daily activities like sitting, getting off the toilet, or bending to pick something up?  A properly executed squat is critical to your overall low back health because of its ability to strengthen the thighs, hips, glutes, and core.  It can improve your balance, flexibility, and help you maintain your independence.

Using a resistance band adds more loads to a regular squat and allows for greater muscle activation.  Depending on your fitness level, choose a band that provides challenging resistance, allowing you to maintain proper form without your knees turning inward.

Jenny Sweat, Legacy Clinic’s Corrective Trainer, recommends the following steps to correctly perform a squat movement using a resistance band:

RESISTANCE BAND SQUAT:

1) Stand with your feet slightly more than hip-width apart with a band just above your knees.  Your toes are pointed forward or slightly outward with your hands on your hips or in front of you.

2) Grip the floor with your toes and press your heels into the floor.  This helps to engage your glutes/buttocks more and maintain better balance.

3) Slowly push your hips back into a sitting position while bending your knees, keeping your knees behind your toes.  You can lower yourself until your knees are at a 45 to 90-degree angle.

3) Breathe in and hold the position for 2-3 seconds, then breathe out and slowly lift back up into the starting position, pushing through your toes and heels.  Slowly stand up while pulling your belly button in towards your spine and focusing on squeezing your glutes/buttocks.

Perform 2-3 sets of 8-12 reps every other day.

Jenny Sweat is a Corrective Trainer at Legacy Clinic. She has over 30 years of experience and holds a master's degree in exercise science. Her focus is to provide specific training and exercises to help your body function better. If you are looking for unique and corrective personal training, contact Legacy Clinic and set up an evaluation with Jenny Sweat.

Treat Disc Herniations With Spinal Decompression

There are 24 moveable vertebras in the spine with 23 vertebral discs that are between the vertebras. The discs have a couple of functions that consist mostly of providing a shock absorber and flexibility. It also keeps the space open where the spinal nerves exit that is between each vertebra. These nerves can travel to each cell, muscle, and organ in the body.

The spinal discs are under a lot of loads each day from sitting, standing, bending, twisting, and lifting. This extra force and pressure on the disc cause the intervertebral discs to degenerate, thin, narrow, bulge, herniate, or protrude. When the disc space is decreased, the canal where the nerves come out also narrows. This can put pressure on the nerves that exit the spine. One of the most common nerves that exit the low back is the sciatica nerve. The sciatica nerve is made up of nerve roots from L4-S3. Wear and tear on the lumbar spine can easily narrow the lumbar disc space and put unbearable pressure on the nerves that make up the sciatica nerve.

Treatment options for Disc Herniation:

  1. Spinal decompression to open the disc space
  2. Corrective training to restore the lumbar curves
  3.  medical options consisting of pain management or surgery

The Importance Of Stimulating Your Adrenal Glands With Chiropractic!!

By Dr. Chris Kessler, DC
In honor of September being the birth month of Chiropractic, I wanted to take a moment and focus on one vertebra and that you should always have adjusted in order to stimulate your immune system.
Your ninth thoracic vertebrae (T9) are the most important vertebrae I can stimulate if a patient walks in my door with a decreased immune system or is feeling under the weather. Symptoms of a decreased immune system can include brain fog, craving sweets or salty snacks, having a decreased sex drive, depression, difficulty getting over an illness, fatigue for no reason, inability to get restful sleep, inability to think clearly, insomnia, low energy especially in the morning, muscle and bone loss, muscular weakness and poor memory. All of these symptoms listed can be the result of a decreased immune system. One way to boost the immune system neurologically is to directly stimulate the adrenal glands in the body. Adrenal glands help your body deal with stress. When adrenal glands are under chronic or excessive stress in the body they can fatigue which directly decreases the immune system. Adrenal fatigue is very common in society today and one of the most underdiagnosed and under-treated clinical conditions. By getting a chiropractic adjustment on T9 we are able to directly stimulate the adrenal glands and improve immune system function in the body.
So if you are feeling tired, low on energy, and run down it is time to visit the Doctors of Legacy Clinic to get your ninth thoracic vertebrae adjusted in order to stimulate your adrenal glands and instantly boost your immune system

Trap Strain or Neck Pain - Chiropractor in The Villages

Many athletes, fitness gurus, or people doing manual labor can easily subluxate or misalign vertebras. One thing we often see is athletes that may have injuries to a shoulder and the body will recruit other muscles to get the shoulder and rotator cuff moving. Other muscles are used to assist when lifting, throwing, pushing, pulling, rowing, and other shoulder motions. When recruitment of other muscles around the shoulder happens, it can easily subluxate the scapula and upper ribs, resulting in a strained muscle of the trap, neck, or shoulder. Most people have difficulty turning their necks and have deep or sharp pain in the trap muscle. It is extremely painful and you want relief quick. Usually, muscle relaxers are prescribed, which may temporarily provide relief and may result in a deeper muscle strain when the medication wears off. This is subluxation is often misdiagnosed by many doctors and is easily corrected by the Chiropractors at Legacy Clinic in The Villages. This is fixed fast in relief is felt after the first treatment. Many patients are amazed that they can go back to exercise or training without any limitations.

The Trapezius muscle originates at the occipital and the C7-T12 vertebrae. It inserts at the posterior border of the clavicle, acromion process, scapula. Trap pain can travel anywhere in this large muscle when a subluxation occurs from a misalignment.

The Chiropractors at Legacy Clinic see golfers, polo players, pickleball players, dragon boaters, and other athletes that have this trapezius pain. It is even seen in people who overuse the arm from pairing or someone who took a fall. It is often misdiagnosed and treated as neck pain. The trap spasm gets worse with activity, exercise, and massage. The worsening spasm results in people seeking strong muscle relaxers or steroid injections. This scapula/rib misalignment can easily be fixed with a specific adjustment done by stretching the lower cervical and manipulating the misaligned scapula. When this is set, you immediately feel the tension, pulling, and spasm of the trap muscle release.

If you are experiencing trap pain, scapula pain, or lower neck pain, let the chiropractors at Legacy Clinic evaluate you.

Acupuncture For Tight Muscles

HOW DO YOU RELEASE MUSCLES AND TRIGGER POINTS WITH ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture releases trigger points by finding the most tender and tight band of muscle and using an acupuncture needle to poke the muscle and get it to involuntarily contract. Releasing a trigger point gets the muscle out of the shortened state and usually, after a few contractions, it softens and remains in a more elongated and relaxed state. As an acupuncturist, Dr. Perry can feel the resistance at the needle soften as trigger points and muscles are being released. Some patients describe the feeling as “popping a tension bubble” or “melting away tightness and tension.”
woman-acupuncture-session-relaxed 2

Some trigger point conditions may resolve in one treatment while others may need five or more treatments for the muscle to reprogram itself. If it is a chronic condition and there are ongoing lifestyle factors that contribute to the issue it can take more time or reoccur if treatment is not frequent enough. There can be soreness in the muscle for up to 72 hours after trigger point release that feels like the muscle soreness after a workout.
It is recommended to apply warmth and engage in gentle movements in the days following trigger point release to help reduce soreness and promote blood circulation in the affected area. When a muscle is pain-free and unrestricted, it can move in its full range of motion will helps the body’s structural alignment.

Seasonal Allergies!
th (1)
Here's how to combat them quickly!

With spring just around the corner, seasonal allergies will be on the rise.
Allergies are among the most common chronic conditions worldwide. Allergy symptoms range from making you miserable to putting you at risk for life-threatening reactions. According to the leading experts in allergy, an allergic reaction begins in the immune system. Our immune system protects us from invading organisms that can cause illness. If you have an allergy, your immune system mistakes an otherwise harmless substance as an invader. This substance is called an allergen. The immune system overreacts to the allergen by producing Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. These antibodies travel to cells that release histamine and other chemicals, causing an allergic reaction.

Allergy Symptoms
An allergic reaction typically triggers symptoms in the nose, lungs, throat, sinuses, ears, lining of the stomach or on the skin. For some people, allergies can also trigger symptoms of asthma. In the most serious cases, a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis (an-a-fi-LAK-sis) can occur.
A number of different allergens are responsible for allergic reactions. The most common include:
• Pollen
• Dust
• Food
• Insect stings
• Animal dander
• Mold
• Medications
• Latex

Luckily airborne seasonal allergies can be treated at home with a homemade remedy. Local raw honey, unfiltered and not heated. By dosing yourself every day you will help your immune system build a tolerance. Mix one table spoon of honey in Raw Unfiltered apple cider vinegar diluted in 8oz of water first thing in the morning to boost your metabolism and reduce your symptoms of seasonal allergies
