Acupuncture in The Villages

Hello Legacy Family!

Have you heard of acupuncture but aren't sure exactly what is involved? You're not alone. There are a lot of misconceptions out there about acupuncture and we'd like to clear a few things up.
  • Acupuncture is painful - This seems to be based on a fear of needles. While that fear is real, the pain is not. The needles used are about the width of a strand of hair.
  • Acupuncture doesn't work - Acupuncture was helping people long before western medicine. It does not involve harmful chemicals and has been proven to provide relief to many symptoms.
  • Acupuncture is expensive - Acupuncture is becoming recognized by more and more healthcare professionals and insurance companies are starting to see the benefits of including it in their plans.
  • Acupuncture is addictive - Although some patients will need a few sessions to gain the maximum benefits of acupuncture, it is not addictive. Quite oppositely, acupuncture can often help curb other addictions like smoking or alcohol.

seasonal allergies

Seasonal Allergies

As springtime approaches, leaves begin to appear, flowers bloom and
the new season of green grass begins to grow. It is a wonderful time
of the year to see life come back and all the beauty it has to offer. That is of course if you’re not a seasonal allergy sufferer. The nasal
congestion, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, wheezing, itchy eyes and throat, skin rashes, headaches and fatigue may just hamper the
enjoyment that many other derive from this time of year.

So what actually is an allergic reaction? It is basically the body’s
inappropriate response to substances it believes is foreign. When an
antigen or foreign substance enters the body the body produces
antibodies in direct response to this invader. These antibodies
(referred to as immunoglobulin E or IgE) are perfect fits and combine
with the antigen like a glove would fit a hand. This combination then
impacts on a certain type of white blood cell called mast cells. Mast
cells are predominately found in the nose, skin, lungs, and digestive
tract. This antigen-antibody reaction creates a release of a substance
from the mast cells called histamine. The nose, eyes and breathing
passages have receptors on them specific for histamine and when it
arrives the itching, sneezing, swelling etc. begin.

Most sufferers will take over the counter medications due to the
severe discomfort allergies can create. Unfortunately most
medications have side effects such as fatigue or heart rhythm
disturbances. Some of the over the counter medications can have
serious side effects if combined with other medications.

There are some natural remedies that work fairly quickly with
absolutely no side effects. One of the most effective remedies that I
have seen over the years is a product made by Standard Process
called Antronex. Discovered by Japanese researchers in the 1920’s,
antronex has a strong anti-histaminic effect and is actually a special
liver extract which the Japanese named Yakitron. Yakitron is the blood
filtering fraction of the liver so the product quickens the detoxification of the blood in its flow through the liver.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Iliotibial band syndrome is an overuse injury of the connective issues that are located on the outer thigh and knee.
The iliotibial band runs along the lateral or outside aspect of the thigh, from the pelvis to the tibia, crossing both the hip and knee joints. The iliotibial band is an important stabilizer structure of the lateral part of the knee as the joint flexes and extends.
Inflammation and irritation of the iliotibial band can occur as it travels back and forth, crossing the bony prominence of the femoral epicondyle as the knee flexes and extends.
Iliotibial band syndrome is an overuse injury causing pain on the outside part of the knee, hip, or thigh

What causes IT Band Syndrome:

Pelvis is out of alignment
Flat feet
Overuse or the area such as walking, running, or cycling

itb

How do I treat this problem?

Adjust the pelvis
Ultrasound therapy over the affected area
Ice or heat over the affected area and depending on the severity of the problem
Topical anti-inflammatory such as CBD Clinic Cream available at the clinic.
Maintaining flexibility by stretching to prevent
Fitting good quality orthotics available at the Clinic

If left untreated it can cause knee swelling, formation of scar tissue, reduction of muscle use which could lead to poor mobility and arthritis

First Rib Subluxation

spacer.gifspacer.gifspacer.gif

First Rib Subluxation

First Rib Subluxations are one of the most misdiagnosed and overlooked issues when a patient is examined by a medical doctor and one that walks into our office on a daily basis.

If you have a first rib subluxation you may be experiencing a plethora of symptoms including headaches, breathing difficulties, numbness, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, chest pain and pain throughout your entire arm and hand.

The first rib in the human body is an atypical rib and is an important anatomical landmark. It wraps around the cervical spine and touches both the sternum in the front of your body and the lateral aspect of your first thoracic vertebrae just below the base of your neck. This bone can become fixated in a superior position and can cause varying degrees of pain. We find that this subluxation can occur after sleeping in an odd position, if a person normally has forward head posture or if you spend a lot of time with your head flexed forward while reading or texting.

First rib subluxation is usually involved if someone is diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome which can compress the nerves, arteries or veins in the passageway from the lower neck to the upper arm. It can inhibit the body’s ability to naturally supply the arm with proper blood and nerve supply and can often inhibit an individual from being able to fully raise their arms above their head.

This type of problem should normally be fixed in our office in a total of 3-4 visits without the use of drugs or surgery.

Treatment May Include:

Chiropractic Adjustments to restore proper position of the bone.
Ultrasound to bring blood flow and oxygen back to the area.
Cupping and Graston Technique are often used to relax the muscles around the area to ensure that the bone is not pulled back out of place after the adjustment itself.
Kinesio Taping to hold the adjustment in place and to ensure speedy healing.
