Sciatica Gone!

A patient recently came to us on the advice of her friend. She had been battling sciatica pain for 15 years and had tried everything. Having been through years of physical therapy, pain management and shots into her spine, she came away with no results at all. This has caused her to miss out on some of the things she enjoys in life like dancing and golf! After all but giving up on ever feeling well again, she followed a friend's advice and came to see us. After treatment at Legacy Clinic, she has no more pain and we are happy to report that she is back to dancing and golfing again!

We love to hear and share about our patients' getting back to their lives and no longer just managing the pain. If you would like us to share your story, please let us know.

Daylight Savings Is Back!

As we transistion to less sunlight - both because there is less time during the day when the sun is out and because we spend more time indoors due to weather - it becomes time to think about your Vitamin D levels.
Sunlight increases the amount of Vitamin D-3 produced inside your body. Vitamin D-3 is actually a hormone that plays vital roles in our bodies, especially in regulating our immune system.
Flu season follows the cycle of the sun around the world. Meaning anywhere in the world that sunlight is least seasonally, people are getting sick. Research has shown that lack of Vitamin D-3 is a big reason for this.
Most people benefit greatly from taking 2000 IU to 5000 IU a day, but getting tested is the only way to know where your levels are at and what your supplementation amount should be!

Share this for anyone who suffers from seasonal sickness!

Legacy Clinic proudly supplies a host of supplements to aid those who need a boost including Vitamin D-3

Choosing The Right Chiropractor

Choosing the right chiropractor is extremely important!.While it can be confusing with a number of options to choose from, there are things you should be looking for. A few of them are:

  • Making sure what type of technique the doctors practice. Legacy Clinic is one of only 7 clinics in Florida that practice the Pettibon system. We have patients that travel from hours away to see us.
  • Making sure the doctors work as a team. If you have a flare up and your primary chiropractor is not in the office, you will want to know that there are options available and the other doctors know your case specifics. Our doctors share information with each other so that any of them can treat any patient.
  • Making sure the doctors are willing to educate you on your condition. The word "doctor" means teacher. If he or she is not teaching you, then they are not doing their job. This is the mantra of Legacy Clinic and it extends throughout the entire staff.
  • Making sure the doctors and staff are concerned about your health as it relates to your whole body. A good chiropractic clinic will offer more than just a couple therapies. At Legacy Clinic, we offer chirpractic care for all types of degeneration and disease, but we also offer massage, laser therapy, ultrasound therapy, weight loss programs, acupuncture and more.
These are just a few things to help narrow down the search for quality health care. Your health should be your number 1 priority and the doctors and staff at Legacy Clinic will make it their number 1 priority too.

First Rib Subluxation

spacer.gifspacer.gifspacer.gif

First Rib Subluxation

First Rib Subluxations are one of the most misdiagnosed and overlooked issues when a patient is examined by a medical doctor and one that walks into our office on a daily basis.

If you have a first rib subluxation you may be experiencing a plethora of symptoms including headaches, breathing difficulties, numbness, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, chest pain and pain throughout your entire arm and hand.

The first rib in the human body is an atypical rib and is an important anatomical landmark. It wraps around the cervical spine and touches both the sternum in the front of your body and the lateral aspect of your first thoracic vertebrae just below the base of your neck. This bone can become fixated in a superior position and can cause varying degrees of pain. We find that this subluxation can occur after sleeping in an odd position, if a person normally has forward head posture or if you spend a lot of time with your head flexed forward while reading or texting.

First rib subluxation is usually involved if someone is diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome which can compress the nerves, arteries or veins in the passageway from the lower neck to the upper arm. It can inhibit the body’s ability to naturally supply the arm with proper blood and nerve supply and can often inhibit an individual from being able to fully raise their arms above their head.

This type of problem should normally be fixed in our office in a total of 3-4 visits without the use of drugs or surgery.

Treatment May Include:

Chiropractic Adjustments to restore proper position of the bone.
Ultrasound to bring blood flow and oxygen back to the area.
Cupping and Graston Technique are often used to relax the muscles around the area to ensure that the bone is not pulled back out of place after the adjustment itself.
Kinesio Taping to hold the adjustment in place and to ensure speedy healing.

Causes and Treatments
plantar-fasciitis
large_box_top.gif
Plantar Fasciitis
Most common cause of heel pain.  It is caused by the inflammation of
The thick band of tissue at the bottom of the foot and connects your heel bone to the toes.   Symptoms are stabbing pains that usually occur with your first steps, pain at the top of the foot, and numbness in the feet. Pain may return after long periods of standing or after rising from sitting. Plantar fasciitis is more common in runners, people with flat feet, Overweight, or wearing shoes with inadequate support.

Risk factors include:
Age: common between ages 40-60
Certain types of exercise: running, ballistic jumping, dancing, aerobic exercise
Foot mechanics: being flat footed
Occupations that keep you on your feet: spending hours on your feet walking or standing on hard surfaces.

Complications:
Chronic heel pain, heel spurs, foot, knee, hip, and back pain.

Treatments:
IASTM: also known as Graston technique to reduce inflammation on the plantar fasciitis
Ultrasound therapy: Breaks adhesions of the fasciitis and reduces inflammation
Laser therapy: reduce inflammation of the plantar fasciitis
Customized orthotics: supports the arch and reduces pressure on the plantar fasciitis Foot adjustments: adjusting the bones of the feet will help reduce the  pressure on the joints of the feet and reduce inflammation.

Feeling Rusty?

Feeling A Little Rusty?

Does it take a while for you to get going in the morning?
Joints a little stiff and achy, but take a few hours to loosen?
Stiff, tired joints can leave you feeling (and acting) much older than you are!

MOTION IS LIFE

If you let anything sit in one place for too long, it's bound to freeze up like a rusted hinge.
The joints in our body are no different!
(when subjected to long standing fixations/ restrictions)
This is why maintenance chiropractic care is so beneficial.
Adjustments unlock 'stuck' joints before they become painful, arthritic and frozen in place -
the longer you wait between visits,
the more work is required to get them moving again!
Like rusted hinges, chronically fixated joints take TLC and more frequent adjustments to become free again.

Avoid the hassle and visit your Chiropractor regularly,
not just when you can't move.

Don't just cover up joint pain, address it from the source!

Joint Vibrance

Joint Vibrance provides cartilage-building cells called chondrocytes with the proper nutrients necessary for construction of new cartilage and synthesis of hyaluronic acid. The entire formula is truly remarkable.

Before we are born, chondrocytes work rapidly to build protection into our developing skeletons. Then we are born, grow, and age. The older we become, the slower chondrocytes work.

As chondrocyte activity flags over time, they eventually fail to adequately compensate for the daily wear and tear placed on joints by an active lifestyle. As a result, nearly everyone has some degree of cartilage breakdown by the age of 32 to 35. For centuries it was thought that the gradual deterioration made joint pain and loss of mobility an inevitable fact of aging.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is produced by keratinocytes and is a member of a large family of glycosaminoglycans, the main components of the extracellular matrix. It is abundant in tissues and fluids, with the highest concentrations in synovial fluid, vitreous humor and skin. HA helps to support joint integrity and provides supplemental support for skin health.

Chiropractic in the media

I’m  sure that many of you have seen chiropractic being discussed in the media lately. Tomorrow on Dr. Oz he will be discussing the safety of chiropractic adjustments along with a panel of medical experts. This all comes about after the unfortunate death of mode Katie May who suffered a trauma to her neck and after suffering the trauma to her neck she sought care from her chiropractor. Below is some basic information on the type of condition she had and how chiropractic has been proven time and time again to be completely safe and effective.

  • Arterial dissection of the cervical (neck) arteries is a very rare condition occurring in 2-3 persons per 100,000 population per year. As this condition often produces neck pain and headaches, many times individuals will consult with their health care providers for advice or treatment in response to the discomfort.
  • Whether a person consults a medical doctor or doctor of chiropractic, stroke can follow at an equal rate regardless of the type of provider. Epidemiologic studies over many years with millions of patients do not reveal any greater association of stroke for persons under chiropractic care compared with persons under medical care.
  • In February 2016, a team of neurosurgeons at the University of Pennsylvania Hershey Medical Center published research concluding, “There is no convincing evidence to support a causal link between chiropractic manipulation and cervical artery dissection (CAD).”
  • Chiropractic manipulation has shown to be safe, effective treatment for neck, mid back and lower back pain. A comprehensive review of scientific evidence noted that there is as much evidence supporting chiropractic care as for other treatments such as prescription and non-prescription drugs and surgery.

The Journal of American Medical Association now recommends Chiropractic as a first means of treating low back pain.

Can Chiropractic Treat a Pinched Nerve?
Pinched nerve is also called compressed nerve. It is the pressure put on a nerve root by the surrounding tissues such as bones, ligaments and tendons. A pinched nerve most frequently occurs in the lower spine, the wrist and neck. Other parts of the body can also have pinched nerves.
Causes and Symptoms
The causes of the compressed nerve root vary from a herniated disc to arthritic changes. A herniated disc can result after an injury such as a sport injury. Arthritis is usually age-related changes which occur mainly in the joints and the resulting bone spurs can entrap a nerve. There are also occupational injuries which result from repetitive stress placed on extremities. The compression causes the swelling of the nerve and this disrupts the normal functioning of the nerve.
Most frequently reported symptoms are:
  • Pins and needle sensations in the affected area radiating to adjoining areas
  • Numbness
  • Pain of varying intensity
  • Weakness in the muscles
There are diagnostic tests to confirm a pinched nerve and they include nerve conduction study, electromyography and magnetic resonance imaging MRI.
Chiropractic has been proven to relieve the pain cause by a pinched nerve using a non-invasive, safe and effective treatment program.
Find Relief Through Chiropractic Care
Be aware that pain relief and improvement in the inflammation of an injured limb oftentimes does not address the root of the problem which made you susceptible to the injury in the first place. Temporary relief, recurrent pain and swelling are the body’s signal that the problem still exists.
It is time to see a chiropractor for adjustments when ice and rest have not resolved the pain and discomfort. Also, if there is relief and then the pain re-occurs once regular activity or training are resumed, then you need to see a chiropractor without delay.
In order to rule out the possibility of other similar orthopedic problems, x-rays, scans and imaging (MRI) are good diagnostic tools.
The chiropractor relieves the pain in the legs by relieving the pressure that compresses the nerve root. A non-invasive therapy used by the chiropractor is the manipulation of the pelvis. Overweight individuals should try to lose the extra pounds as this brings relief from the leg pain and discomfort.
Other useful therapies are:
  • Postural retraining
  • Acupuncture and acupressure
  • Yoga
  • Aromatherapy
  • Color Therapy
  • Weight management program
  • Herbal Therapy
For severe nerve compression, there are non-surgical chiropractic solutions but some cases may require a surgical solution to release the entrapped nerve.
We Know Your Pain
Chiropractic is based on the fact that the body can heal itself naturally. When the nervous system is at its peak performance, the body can resist disease. Thus, chiropractic care focuses on improving the function of the nervous system. This has a positive impact on many health conditions like a pinched nerve.
As your chiropractor, we know how a pinched nerve can cause pain and what causes the pain. We can stop the pain and you will find relief. What we offer is a safe, drug-free treatment approach.
We offer you better health using the natural approach. And it has been proven to be effective, too.

Sinus Trouble Miracle

SEASONAL ALLERGIES

As  springtime  approaches,  leaves  begin  to  appear,  flowers  bloom  and  the new season of green grass begins to grow. It is a wonderful time of the year to  see  life  come back  and  all  the  beauty  it  has  to  offer.  That  is  of  course  if you’re  not  a seasonal allergy  sufferer.  The nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, wheezing, itchy eyes and throat, skin rashes, headaches and fatigue may just hamper the enjoyment that many other derive from this time of year.

So   what   actually   is   an   allergic   reaction?   It is basically the body’s inappropriate response to substances it believes is foreign. When an antigen or  foreign  substance enters  the  body  the  body  produces  antibodies  in  direct response to this invader. These antibodies (referred to as immunoglobulin E or IgE) are perfect fits and combine with the antigen like a glove would fit a hand.  This  combination  then  impacts  on  a certain  type  of  white  blood  cell called  mast  cells.  Mast cells are predominately found in the nose, skin, lungs, and digestive tract. This antigen-antibody reaction creates a release of a substance from the mast cells called histamine.  The  nose,  eyes  and breathing  passages  have  receptors  on  them  specific  for  histamine  and  when it arrives  the  itching,  sneezing,  swelling  etc. begin.

Most  sufferers  will  take  over  the  counter  medications  due  to  the  severe discomfort allergies  can  create.  Unfortunately  most  medications have  side effects  such  as fatigue  or  heart  rhythm  disturbances.    Some  of  the  over  the counter  medications can  have  serious  side  effects  if  combined  with  other medications.

There are some natural remedies that work fairly quickly with absolutely no side  effects. One  of  the  most  effective  remedies  that  I  have  seen  over  the years is a product made by Standard Process called Antronex. Discovered by  Japanese  researchers  in  the 1920’s,  Antronex  has  a  strong  anti-histaminic effect  and  is  actually  a  special  liver extract  which  the  Japanese  named Yakitron.  Yakitron  is  the  blood  filtering  fraction of  the  liver  so  the  product quickens  the  detoxification  of  the  blood  in  its  flow through  the  liver.  Antronex works best in an acidic gastrointestinal tract so you may also need some digestive enzymes to acidify yourself.  People  with  the  severest  of allergies  will  usually  start  with  three  tablets  up  to  four  times  a  day.  Within two days a significant improvement is usually noticed.

Antronex is sold at Legacy Clinic of Chiropractic

Custom Orthotics for Pain

Image

Foot Levelers Custom Orthotic Foot Scanning. We partner with Foot Levelers to provide the best custom orthotics available. Get pain relief for low back pain, orthotics for plantar fasciitis and neck pain. Our clinic has a digital foot scanner available to determine the specific support needed for each individual foot and the orthotics are then tailored to fit your activity level.

Why Foot Levelers from Legacy Clinic of Chiropractic

Would you wear eyeglasses that weren’t prescribed for you? Or take an over-the-counter drug for a problem that requires a prescription drug? Of course not — you take care of your health and do what is right for your overall well-being.

Support for your entire body.

Most orthotic companies only support one arch. When only one arch is being supported the problem shifts to another part of your body. Functional orthotics support the three interconnected arches of your foot, the plantar vault. The structural support for the entire body’s equilibrium is gained from your feet’s plantar vault. Make an appointment for a foot scan at (352) 259-0024.

Specifically made for YOU!

Unlike generic, over-the-counter orthotics, our Functional orthotics are individually designed for your unique postural problems — not just problems with your feet. We believe that correcting imbalances in your feet can properly align your spine and pelvis. Our Functional orthotics offer more than just short-term symptom relief. They also promote whole-body wellness for your life. – Call Legacy Clinic of Chiropractic in The Villages, FL at (352) 259-0024
