Laser Therapy for Tendonitis

What is Tendonitis?

Tendonitis occurs when the flexible bands of tissue that connect the bones to the muscles become inflamed and painful. This is sometimes referred to as "tennis elbow" or "golfer's elbow", but it can happen throughout the body. Current treatments for tendonitis often revolve around stretching and conditioning, heavy us of anti-inflammatories, massage, and heat or ice packs. While these treatments can be effective, they often take a long time to work and excessive use of NSAIDs can lead to much more severe problems. Luckily, there's good news!

Recently, high intensity laser therapy (HILT) has come to the foreground of techniques to treat tendonitis along with a host of other diagnoses. This technique has proven to be fast, reliable and safe. New research has added weight to the claims of laser therapy.

But how does it work?

We're glad you asked. Laser therapy works by emitting light (laser) deep into the tissue. Studies have shown that it is able to penetrate further than ultrasound waves. The result of this is an improvement of tissue repair. It also increases the speed at which your lymphatic system drains from the injured areas. Research is showing that it also increases recruitment of cells to an injured area which speeds up your body's natural healing process.

Yes, but DOES it work?

Another great question! Clinical studies have shown that patients treated with laser showed much greater decreases in pain. They also had better outcomes with joint mobility, functionality, and muscle strength.

Acupuncture. Is it for me?

Acupuncture is becoming a treatment that is much more well known but there are still a lot of questions about it.

What does it do? Will it hurt? Does it really work? These are popular questions heard in and out of the office. We want to shed some light on this fantastic practice and clear up any concerns you may have.

The question I hear most is, "Will it hurt?". Everyone has a different level of sensitivity, but having had it done myself, I can safely say that it does not hurt. Many patients actually get so relaxed that they fall asleep. The needles (or pins) used are as thin as a hair and don't need to be invasively inserted like a syringe neeedle would be.

Another question often heard is "Will it work?". This, of course, is a lot tougher to answer. The answer depends greatly on what the person is trying to treat. Please note that this will NOT cure cancer or any other outrageous claim that  may be found on the internet. That being said, acupuncture has been proven very effective in many situations through studies conducted by notable authorities such as the World Health Organization and others. Just to name a few of the things that acupuncture can treat: anxiety, arthritis, headaches, chronic pain, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

The question "What does it do?" is also a complicated one, which is why there is a LOT of schooling needed to perform this therapy. To simplify as best as I can, acupuncture promotes the natural healing process and improves body functions by stimulating specific areas of the body. This stimulation also releases endorphines which are your body's natural painkillers!

If you have been thinking about acupuncture or have further questions about this therapy, please contact us at Legacy Clinic byt the information provided below.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Iliotibial band syndrome is an overuse injury of the connective issues that are located on the outer thigh and knee.
The iliotibial band runs along the lateral or outside aspect of the thigh, from the pelvis to the tibia, crossing both the hip and knee joints. The iliotibial band is an important stabilizer structure of the lateral part of the knee as the joint flexes and extends.
Inflammation and irritation of the iliotibial band can occur as it travels back and forth, crossing the bony prominence of the femoral epicondyle as the knee flexes and extends.
Iliotibial band syndrome is an overuse injury causing pain on the outside part of the knee, hip, or thigh

What causes IT Band Syndrome:

Pelvis is out of alignment
Flat feet
Overuse or the area such as walking, running, or cycling

How do I treat this problem?

Adjust the pelvis
Ultrasound therapy over the affected area
Ice or heat over the affected area and depending on the severity of the problem
Topical anti-inflammatory such as CBD Clinic Cream available at the clinic.
Maintaining flexibility by stretching to prevent
Fitting good quality orthotics available at the Clinic

If left untreated it can cause knee swelling, formation of scar tissue, reduction of muscle use which could lead to poor mobility and arthritis
